Toledo police, dog warden rescue five dogs living in ‘deplorable’ conditions, owner charged with neglect

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Filthy living conditions, aggressive dogs, and dead pets were all factors that led to one Toledo woman getting charged for neglecting animals.

Toledo police were the first to respond to the 200 block of Plymouth Street after a caller reported abandoned dogs running wild in their East Toledo neighborhood, killing cats.

This was not the first time officers had been to that house. In the bodycam video of the incident, officers said not much had changed since they responded to the home in the summer.

“I think we ended up giving her like a summons or something and we did a report. But here we are in December, they’re describing the same lady, the dogs are the same, several in the house, they ******* charged at us when we first got here and she’s nowhere to be found,” the officer said.

Officers said two dogs were behaving aggressively, and had to use OC Spray to force them to retreat. After police contained the dogs in the yard, they called the dog warden who lured one dog out of the yard and into a van.

The group of officers head into the yard to find another dog inside of a tent, and a kiddie pool with two dead dogs inside.

Officers then notice more barking, this time coming from inside the home. Police kicked the door in and were met with the “overwhelming odor of garbage and animal excrement.”

The dog warden officer wrote in a report that the “dogs inside were living in squalor, feces and trash everywhere.”

The group ended up rescuing a total of five dogs, which were sent to Lucas County Canine Care and Control. LC4 then transported the dogs to the Humane Society for evaluation.

Charging documents show that the dogs’ owner, Sparkle King, is being charged by the State of Ohio with two counts of prohibitions concerning companion animals. The state wrote that the first charge is related to three dogs being kept outside with no shelter or water in 20-degree weather. The state wrote that the owner admitted she was gone for two days.

The second charge is related to two dogs being kept in a vacant, windowless house with deplorable conditions including garbage and feces throughout the home.

King, the dogs’ owner, is summoned to appear in Toledo Municipal Court on Dec. 12 at 9 a.m.
