Water Street in Chardon was closed the night of Dec. 13 as crews responded to an active structure fire at Maple Ridge Apartments that killed two cats and displaced several tenants.
The fire occurred in a second-floor unit, Chardon Fire Department posted on its Facebook page Dec. 14.
No person was injured in the fire, as the residents of the unit were not home at the time, officials said, adding one person was transported for a medical issue not related to the fire.
Tennents from approximately eight apartments have been displaced and the American Red Cross was called in for assistance, according to the fire department.
The fire’s cause is currently unknown, however, the Geauga Fire Investigation Unit is working to determine one, officials said in the post.
Units from Kirtland and Concord, Munson and Hambden townships provided mutual aid. The Burton Fire Department ran Chardon’s squad calls during the fire.
